Rendering preferences

You can set the following preferences in the Rendering category of the Preferences window.

To return to the default factory settings, choose Edit > Restore Default Settings in this window. Note that this resets the preferences in every category in the Preferences window.

Rendering

Preferred renderer

You can select your preferred renderer. This is the renderer that Maya resets to when you create a new scene (File > New Scene) or when you start Maya.

Preferred Render Setup system

The legacy render layer system that was available in the Layer Editor in previous versions has been replaced by the render setup system. See Render setup in Maya. This render setup system and the legacy render layers system are separate, independent systems and you can only use either one or the other.

Select which system you would like to use, then restart Maya.

Render Setup Preferences

You can export your render setup as a template in the form of a .json file. For example, you can export your entire render setup configuration, or only a subset of collections, or a render layer and its collections. You can export and import this template into another scene so that you don't have to re-create your render setup.

Likewise, you can export your Render Settings presets in the form of a .json file to ensure that consistent settings are used to render each shot in a sequence.

Templates and presets can be saved to a network location and shared among multiple users. Set the Global Templates Location and Global Presets Location attributes respectively to this network location.

Templates and presets can also be saved locally for re-use by the individual user. Set the User Templates Location and User Presets Location attributes respectively to this local directory.
