Change where Maya saves files

By default, Maya saves your files to a Projects folder.

When you first start Maya, a default project is created in the following location:

You can also find your current project location by selecting File > Project Window.

Projects are a way to keep track of the files related to a scene by storing them in one location, and is used because scenes can depend upon multiple resources from different locations. See Organize Files into Projects for more information. The Project Window tells you the folder that each type of resource will be saved to.

Your files will be saved to this default project unless you do either of the following:

To select a different default location for your project

  1. Select Windows > Preferences from the Maya main menu.
  2. Select the Files/Projects category and in the Project Settings area, set a location as the default projects directory.

Next time you create a new project by selecting File > Project Window and clicking New, the project will be created in the location you specified.

You can also set a directory so that Maya starts with this project each time.

Note: The Files/Projects category also has information on auto saving your files, as well as where to save the auto saved files, and in what time intervals.
