Extensional viscosity

A measure of the resistance of a polymer to stretching forces.

When a polymer flows through a large cross section to a smaller one, it will be stretched longitudinally. This will result in a pressure drop. The extent of this pressure drop will be dependent upon the extensional viscosity of the particular polymer and the severity of the restriction.

Pressure drop due to extensional effects often occurs when a material flows from a large runner into a very small gate.
