Move a Link Instance to a Named Position

After linking a model to the host model, you can control the position of an instance of the linked model (a link instance) by using an existing shared site (named position) in the linked model, creating a new shared site, or disabling shared positioning between the models.

  1. Select a link instance in the host model.
  2. On the Properties palette, for Shared Site, click the button reporting the Shared Site name.

The Choose Site dialog displays the current position of the link instance.

Note: If the Share Coordinates dialog displays, select an option to reconcile the coordinates, and click Reconcile. The Choose Site dialog then displays.
  3. Specify how to set the position of the link instance:
    Option Description Instructions
Move instance to Moves the link instance to a named position (shared site) defined in the linked model. Select this option, and use the drop-down list to select a named position in the linked model.

When you click OK, the link instance moves to the recorded placement for that named position.

Record current position as Records the current position of the link instance back to the linked model.

Use this option, for example, when you have moved the link instance in the host model, and you want to save its current location as a named position in the linked model.

Select this option, and select an existing named position in the linked model from the list in the Site tab of the Location and Site dialog.

To create a new named position in the linked model, click Change. Select an existing position, click Duplicate, assign a new name, and click OK twice.

Do not share site of selected instance Leaves the link instance in its current position in the host model, and breaks shared positioning between the linked model and the host model.

Use this option to move the link instance in the host model without modifying the linked model.

    Select this option.

When you click OK, the Shared Site parameter for the link instance displays <Not Shared>.

Note: When collaborating in Autodesk Construction Cloud, you cannot change linked positions, and the Record Current Position option is disabled.
  4. Click OK.
  5. When you later save changes to the host model, the Location Position Changed dialog may prompt you to save positioning information back to the linked model. To do so, click Save.
