You can install the latest release of Revit Server on the same computer where previous versions are installed.
You can also install a previous version of Revit Server on the same computer where you have installed the latest release of Revit Server.
Important: Regardless of whether you install Revit Server
2023 Release before or after an older version, to prevent data loss or corruption, it is essential that there be separate, version-specific Cache and Projects root directories, log files, and program files.
In the first scenario, where a previous version is already present when you install Revit Server
2023 Release, the install program will automatically detect that previous version and the directories it uses, and you will be blocked from configuring Revit Server
2023 Release to use those directories or any directories or subdirectories that conflict. However, there is no such safeguard in the second scenario, where you are installing a previous version on a computer where Revit Server
2023 Release has already been installed. In this case, you must ensure that each version has its own Cache and Projects directories and that there is no overlap; that is, one cannot be a subdirectory of the other or the same as the other. For example, any of the following 3 setups for the Projects directories would result in data loss or corruption:
Location for a previous version
|
2023 Release Location
|
C:\MyRevitServerData\Projects
|
C:\MyRevitServerData\Projects
|
C:\MyRevitServerData\Projects
|
C:\MyRevitServerData\Projects\2023 Release
|
C:\MyRevitServerData\Projects
|
C:\MyRevitServerData\
|

Upgrading Models
A model created using a previous version of Revit can be upgraded to the current version in either of the following ways:
- Use Windows file transfer to copy the model from the projects area of the previous version of Revit Server to the Revit Server
2023 Release projects area, open the model, and perform a synchronize with central operation. Note that no administrative operations can be performed on the model in Revit Server Administrator
2023 Release until the synchronization has been completed. Note also that the model (and all of its subfolders and their contents) must have full access to CREATOR OWNER and NETWORK_SERVICE in order to function correctly in the new location.
- Using the (older) previous version of Revit, detach the model from central and save it locally. Then open this locally saved detached copy using Revit
2023 Release and save it to your Revit Server
2023 Release host.
