Video: Create and Divide Parts

Create Parts in your Revit model to divide certain elements into 
individual sections that can be scheduled, 
tagged, filtered, or exported.

This video demonstrates the following:

1. Create a part in the model.
2. Divide a created part along manually drawn selections.
3. Divide a created part according to intersecting references.

Note: This video was recorded using Revit 2022. When using a newer software release, you may notice differences in functionality and user interface.

Use Parts to divide certain elements into 
discrete sections that can be scheduled, 
tagged, filtered or exported.

To support construction modelling workflows, 
Revit lets you divide certain elements into 
discrete parts that can be scheduled, tagged, filtered or exported.

In this example, we’ll create a part using the floor of this building.

To create a part, first navigate to the Create panel under the Modify tab and select the Create Parts tool.

Once the tool is selected, select the desired elements that you want to include in the part.

When you are finished press Enter.

You can also divide a Part into smaller sections using the Divide Parts feature.

In this example, we want to divide the floor into smaller sections to indicate individual cement pours.

Dividing parts can be accomplished by either manually sketching divisions on a selected part, or by using intersecting references to define the divisions on a selected part.

To manually insert a division on a part, first select a part.

Next, click the Divide Parts tool in the Parts panel under the Modify tab.

Here we’ll click the Edit Sketch feature and select the Line option.

Click to set the start point for the dividing line.

Double click to set the end point.

When you have sketched your division line, press ENTER, or alternatively, click the green checkmark.

You can also use the Intersecting References tool to determine division points on a selected part.

To do so, let’s first select the part.

Click Divide Parts and then click Intersecting References.

You can filter all intersecting references in your model by type.

Here, let’s use the dropdown menu to filter grids.

We can now select grids in the model to define the division lines on the part.

Select Grids 2,7,C, and F.

Click Apply and then OK.

Click the green check mark.

The Floor part has now been divided along the selected Grids.
