Learn how the extents of a mounting part are dimensioned and how to use the Create dimensions shared parameter for your precast shop drawings.
If you do not define dimension lines for the mounting part family, the extents of mounting parts will be dimensioned in all shop drawing views. The extents are dimensioned only if the mounting part defines a valid solid - you cannot dimension the extents of bodies that are defined in the family as voids.
As a result, mounting parts with defined dimension lines and not containing a valid solid will be dimensioned twice; once using the defined dimension lines and once with the extents of the main element. If a mounting part without dimension lines contains arc segments, the dimensioning can be incorrect, since arc segments do not contain useful reference points.
If a mounting part should not have its extents dimensioned, you can use the Create dimensions shared parameter as an instance parameter and clear the checkbox in the Value column of the Family Types dialog in the Family Editor.
A mounting part with no defined dimension lines and no solids will be dimensioned with the host element contour, if the mounting part creates a hole. This is just a temporary solution, based on the fact that Revit hides void geometry from the API. All corner points of the resulting host element contour are dimensioned.
Exception: Recesses placed at the edge of the element, not cutting through the element will not be dimensioned.
