Video: Adding a Subcategory to a Reference Plane

Adding subcategories to reference planes make them easier to use and easier to control their visibility in models.

This video demonstrates the following:

  1. Add a subcategory to reference plane category in a family.
  2. Edit the color and line style of the subcategory.
  3. Assign a reference plane to the subcategory.

Transcript

You can assign a subcategory to a reference plane to control visibility and graphics settings. Create different line colors and line styles for reference planes so that it is easy to distinguish how a reference plane is used in Revit families and in complex views and models.

For example, you may want to add subcategories to the reference planes in a window family. To get started, edit a window family.

Use the Object Styles dialog to create a subcategory for each of the centerline reference planes. Enter a name for the subcategory, and change the line color and line pattern.

Next, assign the subcategory to each of the centerline reference planes.

Add another subcategory for the bounding box reference planes, and assign the subcategory to each of the reference planes.

Add a third subcategory for the remaining four reference planes, and assign the subcategory.

If a subcategory does not exist in a project, but exists in a family, that subcategory is created when the family is loaded into the project. Each subcategory displays in the Visibility/Graphic Overrides dialog for every view, and you can turn on or off its visibility as needed.

Use subcategories to assign different line weights, line colors, or line patterns to reference planes in Revit families. You may want to coordinate with team members on additional subcategories for reference planes as needed.
