Video: Wall Layer Wrapping at Doors and Windows

Define how each layer of a compound wall will finish at openings door and window openings.

This video demonstrates the following:

  1. Control the position of the window in the wall.
  2. Setting window family to control wall wrapping behavior.
  3. Illustrating how reference planes control wrapping distance.
  4. Set the wall layer wrapping distance.
Note: This video was recorded using Revit 2020. When using Revit LT, you may notice differences in functionality and user interface.

When you place a door or a window in a wall, you may want to illustrate how the layers of the wall wrap at the opening. Controls on both the wall and the window or door are used to control how this wrapping appears.

For this example, place a window in the wall. In this family, the window position within the wall can be controlled. Select the window and set the inset value to 9 1/8". Click apply and the window position within the wall is changed.

In order for the layers of the wall to wrap, edit the type properties of the window. Click Edit Type. In the type dialog, set the Wall Closure parameter. Closure can be set for interior, exterior, both, or neither. If set to "By Host" then the wall type parameter "Wrapping at Inserts" controls how the layers wrap. In this case, we will have the window control the wrapping and set the layers to wrap interior and exterior.

The interior and exterior wrapping positions are controlled by reference planes in the family. The reference planes identify the closure of the wall when used in the project. In this family, the position of the wall closure reference planes is controlled by a parameter. These planes control how wall layers wrap no matter if wrapping is controlled by the family or the host wall.

The distance of the wrapping is controlled by instance parameters in this family. Set the exterior wrap to 9 5/8" and the interior wrap to 9 7/8" and click apply.

To not have the air space wrap with the brick, select the wall and edit the structure of the wall. Finally, clear the wraps setting for the air space layer.

Use settings on the family and the wall to control how wall layers wrap at both doors and windows.
