Tutorial: Transient Heat Transfer in an EGR Valve
In this tutorial, we compute the steady-state flow and the time history of the temperature distribution in an automotive EGR valve. The valve is fed by a constant flow, and the inlet temperature varies with time.
The analysis geometry consists of three parts: the outer pipe wall, the poppet, and the air:
This tutorial follows a two stage process:
- Solve for the flow. This gives us the velocity distribution which will help us identify stagnation regions and other flow inefficiencies. This also gives us the pressure drop through the valve.
- With the flow solution frozen, solve for the transient heat transfer. This helps us identify if any of the components experience excessive thermal gradients which may lead to high thermal stresses and failure.
