Add a Row to a BOM

By adding rows to an existing BOM, you can add non-CAD items such as grease or adhesives. You can also account for items that are not part of the design but are required for manufacturing and shipment, such as packaging.

You can create a BOM from scratch by creating a new item and building its BOM row by row without ever creating a single CAD file.

Note: When manually adding items to a BOM, remember to enter a quantity for the new item since there may be no CAD data to determine the quantity automatically.

When you add a new row to a BOM, you can choose to link it to an existing item or a new item. New items are not assigned unless you manually assign them.

Add a Row to a BOM

  1. In the item master, double-click an item to open the item record.
  2. Select the Bill of Materials tab.
Note: Rows can only be added to the BOM when it is in multi-level view.
  3. Click Edit on the item record toolbar to put the item record in edit mode.
  4. Right-click a row in the BOM and select Add New Row from the context menu.
  5. Choose whether you want to add an existing item or a new item.

If you choose a new item, the item is added immediately to the BOM. Be sure to fill out the details when you're finished adding rows to the BOM. See Create an Item for more information.

If you choose existing item, use the Find dialog to locate the item or items to add to the bill of materials. From the search results list, select the items to add and then click OK. The items are added to the BOM and automatically turned on.

  6. Click Save on the item record to save your changes.
