About Template Files

Use them to standardize your design process and make it more efficient.

What's New: 2020

Once you activate Inventor, you can open an existing file or start a new file. Templates are available on the File menu New. You can choose from several templates with predefined units.

You can create a part, drawing, assembly, or presentation file using the default template or a custom template that you create. Part and assembly templates set the default units of measurement, file properties, and other defaults for models. Drawing templates set the drafting standard, drawing resources, file properties, and other defaults for drawings. Presentation templates set the file properties for assembly presentations.
Note: Assembly and presentation files are available in Inventor only.

Templates are stored in ®: C:\Users\Public\Documents\Autodesk\Inventor(version number)\Templates\Language

In the Templates folder, subfolders contain the templates that are listed in the Create New File dialog box. You can create and save custom templates in the Templates\Languages folder.

IMPORTANT: All templates are named "Standard.xxx" during installation, this is a change for the localized versions of Inventor. To use localized templates created prior the Inventor 2022 release, we recommend renaming the old templates using a new "Standard.xxx" name as part of the template migration process. For example change "Norm.idw" to "Standard.idw".

Templates storage folders

Templates are stored in the following folder in the English or Metric subfolders.

Subfolders in the Templates\Language folder display as tabs in the Create New File dialog box.

You can create and save custom templates in the Templates\Language folder.
