To Work with Adaptive Geometry and Features

You can make a work feature, sketched feature, part, or subassembly adaptive, use geometry on another component as the origin of work feature, and switch a component between adaptive and flexible.

Make a Work Feature Adaptive

  1. Right-click the work feature in the browser or the graphics window, and then select Adaptive.
  2. On the ribbon, Assemble tab Position panel Constrain.
  3. Constrain the work feature to parts in an assembly to make it adapt to changes in the parts.

Use Geometry on Another Component as the Origin of Work Feature

  1. Open an assembly file containing one or more components.
  2. In the browser, right-click a part file, and select Edit.
  3. On the 3D Model tab, click a work feature command, select geometry on another component to position the work feature, right-click, and select Done.
  4. Use a feature command to create a feature (such as Extrude or Revolve), and then use the work feature as a termination plane or revolution axis.
  5. Right-click and select Finish Edit.
  6. Add an assembly constraint to hold the work feature position.

Change the Adaptive Status of a Work Feature

Make a Sketched Feature Adaptive

  1. In the graphics window or the browser, select a feature.
  2. Right-click, and click Adaptive.
  3. To fix a feature at its current size and shape, right-click the feature and clear the checkbox for Adaptive.
Note: When you make a feature adaptive, all occurrences of the feature are also adaptive. If you use the feature in other parts as an iFeature or a pattern, for example, it can resize. To keep a nonadaptive version of a feature, save it with a different filename.

Set Adaptive Status of Feature Parameters and Sketch Individually

  1. In the browser, click the feature. Then right-click, and click Properties.
  2. To set adaptive status, select Sketch, Parameters, or both.

Make Parts or Subassemblies Adaptive

Set Adaptive Status and Other Characteristics

  1. Select the part, right-click, and click Properties.
  2. In the Properties dialog box, Occurrence tab, click Adaptive.
  3. To fix a part at its current size and shape, right-click the part, and then clear the checkbox for Adaptive.

Switch Component Between Adaptive and Flexible

To see the same subassembly with its components in multiple positions in an assembly, turn off adaptive status, and then turn on flexible status.

  1. In the assembly browser, right-click the adaptive subassembly, and clear the check mark beside Adaptive or Flexible.
  2. Select Flexible or Adaptive.
