Move joints

You can move the joints of a character with a bound skin without having to detach its skin.

To move a joint

  1. Select the Move Tool (hotkey: W) from the Tool Box.
  2. Click on the joint you want to move.

The current joint’s transform manipulators appear.

  3. (Optional) Press D or Insert to isolate your movement to only the selected joint (leaving other joints in the chain unaffected). Alternatively, if the rig is already skinned, use the Move Skinned Joints Tool to accomplish this instead.
  4. You can now press drag the transform manipulators to translate the current joint along its X, Y, and Z axes.
Note:

To have the rotation axis of a parent joint automatically adjust (to continue pointing down the bone) as you move joints, turn on the Automatically Orient Joints option in the Joint Orient Settings of the Move Skinned Joints Tool or the Move Tool.
