Smooth a mesh with OpenSubdiv

OpenSubdiv is the default subdivision method when you smooth a mesh using Mesh > Smooth or when you create a subdiv proxy.

To smooth a mesh with OpenSubdiv

  1. Select the mesh or the faces you want to smooth.
  2. Select Mesh > Smooth > .
  3. In the Smooth Options window that appears, set the OpenSubdiv Catmull-Clark options.
  4. Click Smooth.

    Maya smooths your mesh by adding new polygons and smoothing out vertices and their connected edges.

  5. In the Attribute Editor, select the polySmoothFace tab > OpenSubdiv Controls.

To create a subdiv proxy mesh with OpenSubdiv

  1. Select the mesh you want to smooth.
  2. Select Mesh > Smooth Proxy > Subdiv Proxy > .
  3. In the Subdiv Proxy Options window that appears, set the OpenSubdiv Catmull-Clark options.
  4. Click Smooth.

    Maya smooths the selected mesh and places it inside the original, unsmoothed mesh (the proxy). Maya also creates a new group containing both meshes, and a new layer for each mesh.

  5. In the Attribute Editor, select the polySmoothProxy tab > OpenSubdiv Controls.
