Reposition Named Positions

You can change the placement of a linked file in the host model, which also changes the corresponding named position in the linked file.

After you have set up a shared coordinate system between the host model and the linked files, the placement of a linked file is determined by its corresponding position in the host model. You can drag the linked file to a different placement inside the host model. When you do this, you are actually changing the corresponding position in the linked file.

After you reposition the linked file to a new position, you can save that change in the following ways.

Warning Dialog

After you move the linked file, a warning indicates that the linked file will change. This occurs because you have defined a new placement for the named position in the linked file. In the warning dialog, you can choose to save the linked file or save the new position later by clicking OK. If you click Save Now, Revit saves the new position to the linked model.

Record a New Location using the Manage Links dialog

  1. Click Manage tabManage Project panel (Manage Links).
  2. Click the tab for the model file type that you have linked. For example, if you have linked a Revit model, click the Revit tab.
  3. Click the linked file name to select it.
  4. Click Save Positions.
  5. Select from the following options in the Location Position Changed dialog:
    • Save. Saves the new position of the host model back to the linked model.
    • Do not save. Changes to positions are discarded, and the linked model returns to its previously saved position when it is reloaded or reopened.
    • Disable shared positioning. The linked model keeps its current position. The shared coordinates between the linked model and the host model are disabled. The Shared Position parameter is set to <Not Shared> in the linked model.
  6. Click OK to close the Manage Links dialog.

If you save or close the host model, you are prompted to save the linked models. The Save Modified Linked Model dialog displays.

If you unload a linked model, the Save Modified Linked Model dialog displays. Again, you are prompted to save changes to the linked model.

Save or Close the Host Model

If you save or close the host model, you are prompted to save the linked models. The Save Modified Linked Model dialog displays.

Unload a Linked Model

If you unload a linked model, the Save Modified Linked Model dialog displays. Again, you are prompted to save changes to the linked model.
