Video: Control Visibility and Graphic Display

Control the way elements display in a model using object styles and visibility and graphics overrides.

This video demonstrates the following:

  1. Understand the primary controls for element display.
  2. Understand the Object Styles dialog.
  3. Control line weights in views.
  4. Apply view overrides.
  5. Control graphics visibility with the Visibility/Graphics Overrides dialog.
Note: This video was recorded using Revit 2023. When using a newer software release, you may notice differences in functionality and user interface.

The display of elements is controlled by several factors. The object styles of the project, and the visibility and graphics overrides of the view are the primary controls for altering the display of objects.

Object Styles are global model settings. When make a change to the display of a category in the Object Styles dialog, that change affects every view of the model. Each category has a value for projection and cut line weights as well as settings for the line color and line pattern to be used. There are separate tabs for controlling the display of model, annotation, and imported objects.

A cut line weight is applied to an object if it intersects the cut plane for the view. If an object is not cut, the projected line weight will be used. In this example, when the cut lineweight for wall is changed, the cut walls are shown thicker and the walls below the cut plane use the projected line weight.

Some categories may also have sub-categories to allow finer control over portions of an objects display. For example, a door has many subcategories.

Visibility and Graphics overrides are applied to a view to control how elements are displayed. In the visibility and graphics dialog the check marks can be used to turn on or off the visibility of a category or subcategory. Overrides can also be applied to the cut and projected values for objects.

In this view, the furniture will be turned on and the columns will be set to display magenta. The changes made in the visibility and graphics dialog are now reflected in the view.

When visibility and graphics overrides are used, the change occurs only in the view where the override is applied. Templates can be made from visibility and graphics overrides so the same changes can be applied to many views.

Use both object styles and visibility and graphics overrides to control the way elements display in your Revit projects.
