Video: Use Profile Families

Create and load profile families into a project so they can be used to define geometry of elements.

This video demonstrates the following:

  1. Understand where profiles are used.
  2. Create a profile family.
  3. Assign the profile to an element in the project.

Profile families are 2D closed loop families that are used to define the shape of elements in a model. For example, the round shapes in a railing, the rectangular shape of a fascia, or the more complicated shape of a turned down slab edge are defined by profiles. Many different elements use profiles to define their shape. ​

Click the Application Menu > New > Family to create a profile family. Choose a template that most closely matches your use case. The templates contain information to help you create the profile. In this example, we will create a profile for use as a wall sweep, so the Profile - Hosted template is selected. ​

A closed loop sketch is created that defines the outline of the element. The sketch can be constrained and made parametric like other families. In this example, the part only comes in one shape/size so additional parameters and constraints are not required, just the profile outline will be enough. ​

The Profile Usage property is set to filter the kinds of elements the profile can be used on in the model. For example, this profile is only needed for wall sweeps so the Profile usage is set to match. Profiles set to <Generic> can be used on all elements. The profile is saved and loaded into the model. ​

In the model, select a wall sweep and click Edit Type. In the Type Properties dialog, select the profile. All profiles in the list are either Wall Sweeps or Generic. Other profile families loaded in the model with different profile usage settings are not listed. ​

Use profile families to define the shapes for many elements in your models. Enable the profile usage property to set the specific element the profile can be used on, or set it to generic and the profile can be used on all elements. Add parameters and types to profile families to make them more flexible.
