Video: Use View Templates

Use view templates to apply settings consistently in multiple views.

This video demonstrates the following:

  1. Assign a view template to an existing view in a way that allows the settings to be changed after the template has been applied.
  2. Assign a view template to an existing view in a way that does not allow the settings to be changed after the template has been applied.
  3. Set controls to apply a template to new views.
Note: This video was recorded using Revit 2013. When performing the procedures using Revit LT, you may notice minor differences in functionality and user interface.

View templates are used to assign specific view settings to a view, or to multiple views, in a project. The view template applies the settings consistently across the views.

There are two ways to assign a view template to an existing view, such that the view's properties can still be altered afterward. You can open the View Templates drop-down on the ribbon's View tab and click Apply Template Properties to Current View, or you can select one or more views in the Project Browser, right-click and select Apply View Template. When either of these options is used, the view properties applied in the template are applied in the view, but the view's properties can still be altered using the Properties palette.

In a case where you want to apply the settings from the view templates and lock them, you specify the desired template using the View Template parameter on the Properties palette. As shown here, once the template is applied, the settings it controls cannot be changed.

These settings are now controlled by the settings in the view template. Changes made to the template settings will be applied to all views that have this template assigned in the View Template parameter of the view. By editing a view's type properties, you can specify a template to be assigned whenever new views of that type are created.

The "New views are dependent on template" setting controls whether the new views will be created with a link to the template. When this check box is cleared, you will be able to modify view properties without modifying the template.

Use view templates to control and maintain the consistency of views in your project.
