Solar Heating

Solar heating plays an important role in the design of homes and buildings. Engineers and architects need to understand and account for the effects of solar heating on the energy performance and efficiency of the structures and occupied spaces they create.

In Autodesk CFD, you can simulate the effect of solar heating both externally, such as on a neighborhood or urban scene, and internally, such as the interior of occupied spaces. For external simulations, Autodesk CFD requires a volume of air to be constructed around the scene:

For interior spaces, Autodesk CFD computes the incoming solar energy directly on the exterior surfaces of solid walls and the energy passing through windows and other translucent fixtures:

Autodesk CFD computes Solar heating by using the radiation model to compute view factors and visual projections. It supports radiative heat transfer through transparent media and simulates the effects of shadowing on other objects. With theSolar Heating dialog, you can specify specific geographical locations as well as latitude and longitude. You can also specify the date, time, compass direction, and object orientation relative to the sky.
