Manually Applying Mesh Sizes

Volume and Surface Mesh Sizes

  1. Set the Selection Mode, and select only the Surfaces or Volumes to which the intended mesh size will be applied.
  2. Enter the Element Size (in the length units of the analysis).
  3. As mesh sizes are applied to the geometry, the approximate number of elements to be generated is shown. This estimate updates automatically as element sizes are added, removed, and modified.
  4. Click the Apply button.
Note: It is always good practice to assign volume sizes to ALL volumes in the model. Use surface and edge sizes to refine the mesh as necessary.

Other commands:

The procedure for applying mesh sizes on surfaces is the same as for volumes. Note that it is not necessary to apply mesh sizes to all surfaces in a model.

Note: If Manual sizing is invoked after applying Automatic Sizing, the mesh sizes are maintained, and listed in the Design Study bar.

Edge Mesh Sizes

  1. Set Edge as the selection type, and select the edges in your model.
  2. Select to enter either an Element Size or the Number Of Elements.
  3. If the Number of Elements is entered, elements biasing can be used along the edge. Enter a Bias Factor (a value greater than 1.0). When biasing, elements can be concentrated at the Start, End, in the Middle, or at Both Ends of the edge.
  4. Click Apply.

Which Size Wins?

Because an edge can have several different element sizes (from the volume, surface, and directly to the edge), the smallest size on an entity will be used by the mesher.
