Selecting Things in the Viewport

Learn how to set what is selectable/deselectable in the viewport and the hotkey conmbinations and actions used for quick selection/deselection.

Setting a Selection Target

For a quick way to select only objects, references, groups, or other entities, use the Edit Selection menu. The option selected sets the selection target. To change this, make another selection.

Access the Edit Selection menu using either Edit > Selection or Shift + <abbr title="Middle Mouse Button">MMB</abbr>-click in the viewport, then select the option you want:

How to Change Selection Behavior

  1. In the Menu Bar, click Edit > Selection.

  2. Choose a selection behavior:

    • Make Normals Consistent - When flipping normals using Alt-click, the vertex and face normals of each selected object will be made consistent, that is, pointed in the same direction.
    • Use Depth Selection - Enables you to select all objects within the selection frame, whether they are behind another object or not.

Hotkey Combinations

Once your selection target is set, use the following hotkey shortcut combinations:

Select the selection target Shift + LMB-click the object
Deselect the selection target Shift + RMB-click the object
Deselect all Shift + RMB-click in empty space
Select any selection targets fully enclosed in the selection frame Shift + LMB-drag from top left to bottom right
Select any selection targets fully or partially enclosed in the selection frame Shift + LMB-drag from bottom right to top left
Deselect any selection targets within the selection frame Shift + RMB-drag
Add the selection target to a selection Ctrl + Shift + LMB-click the object
Remove the selection target from a selection Ctrl + Shift + RMB-click the object or on an empty space to clear the selection
