Timeline Improvements (What's New in 2025)

Indicates a feature suggested and voted up by users on the Flame Feedback portal.

Multiple user-requested improvements have been implemented.

The order of the Sequence tabs is in sync with the Media Panel.

  • Reordering sequences in the Media Panel or Desktop Reels view also affects the tabs for the open sequences.
  • It is no longer possible to reorder sequences from the Collapsed view.
  • The Use Localised Sort Order setting available in Preferences > Timeline > Open Sequences can be used to apply the same order to the open sequences tabs as the clips in the Media Panel when a localised sort is applied. As in previous versions, the Localised sort is not applied to the clips in the Desktop Reel. The setting is not applied to the opened sequences in the Other Sequences category.

The Source Timeline can be hidden. An option available in Preferences User Timeline is used to dictate the desired behaviour. It offers four options:

  • Always Show
    • This is the same behaviour as in previous versions.
  • Can be Closed
    • The Source Timeline can be closed using the X button on its tab.
    • The tab is reopened when a clip source is double-clicked on.
    • A Show Source Timeline entry is available in a Source Clip's context menu when the Source Timeline is hidden.
  • Exclusive to Sequences
    • This is the same behaviour previously available in Smoke. The Source and Sequences tab cannot be displayed at the same time.
  • Never Show
    • It is not possible to display the Source Timeline.

The Source Timeline tab is selected when a source clip is doubled-clicked in the Media Panel.

The information box of a clip is displayed when Alt+Click is used on a Timeline tab.

A clip can be opened as a sequence from the MediaHub tab.

  • Also, the Timeline tab is now automatically selected when a sequence is opened from the Batch and Tools tabs.

The Set Focus on Bottommost Track keyboard shortcut can be used to quickly navigate to the bottom track of the current Version.

  • The shortcut is assigned to:
    • Shift+Page Down in the Flame and Lustre keyboard shortcuts profiles.
    • Control+Alt+Down in the Smoke Classic and Smoke (FCP 7) keyboard shortcuts profiles.
  • The shortcut is also available in the Tangent Mapper.

The Export Current Sequence... option has been added to the Source and Sequence tabs' context menu.

  • The selection in the Media Panel is changed so only the current clip is exported.
  • The corresponding Export Current Sequence... keyboard shortcut can be used.
    • The keyboard shortcut is assigned to Shift+Win+E (Linux) or Shift+Command+E (macOS) in all shortcuts profiles.
    • The shortcut is available in the Tangent Mapper, but is not assigned by default.

A timeline segment can now be dropped on top of an existing clip when it is dragged or gesturally copied to the Freeform area.
