Design of Minimum Journal Diameter for Plain Bearings

This program calculates the journal diameter minimum value, convenient for the specified load and bearing operating conditions. The minimum bearing journal diameters are calculated for both the strength stress in a mechanical mechanism and for the bearing capacity above the transient speed frequency. The two values are obtained in the calculation. For the proposed bearing journal minimum value, the next value is used in the standard diameter series relating to the higher calculated value.

The journal diameter is designed using the following two equations. The first equation uses the specified loading force and allowable bending stress of journal material for the calculation:

The second uses the specified loading and the viscosity of the lubricant used:

Meaning of used variables:

d

Journal diameter [mm]

F

Loading force [N]

n

Journal speed [min -1 ]

  η

lubricant dynamic viscosity at its mean temperature at bearing outlet [Pa s]
