To Project Geometry into a 2D Sketch

You can project geometry, cut edges, flat patterns (sheet metal parts), DWG blocks, generate wire, and project to a 2D or 3D sketch.

What's New: 2023

Note: When you select a plane that is perpendicular to the sketch you are dimensioning or constraining with the following commands, the selected workplane will automatically be projected:

In addition, when you add dimensions or constraints to sketch geometry with a work axis or work point, the selected work axis or work point is automatically projected.

Project Geometry

  1. In a 2D sketch, click a face or work plane to set the sketch plane.
  2. Click Sketch tab Create panel Project Geometry .
  3. In the graphics window, click the geometry that you want to project onto the sketch plane. You can click edges, vertices, work features, loops, and curves. If the selection target isn’t visible, rotate the model.
Tip: If you want to select a loop (a closed spline, circle, or ellipse) and multiple selections are available the face highlights. Use Select Other to cycle through selections and when the desired geometry highlights, click to select it. Click a face to project all loops on the face.
Tip: When the Construction geometry toggle is off, press shift and click the geometry you want to project as construction geometry. This also works when the Construction geometry toggle is on, press shift and click the geometry you want to project as sketch geometry. This works in both 2D and 3D sketches.
  4. To finish, right-click and choose Done, press Esc, or click another command.

Project Cut Edges

  1. In a 2D sketch, click a face or work plane to set the sketch plane.
  2. Click Sketch tab Create panel Project Cut Edges .
  3. In the graphics window, click a part that a section plane cuts.

All edges that the plane cuts are projected onto the sketch plane.

  4. To finish, right-click and choose Done, press Esc, or click another command.

Project Composite edges

  1. Import surface data to a composite feature.
  2. Place a 2D sketch which intersects the composite.
  3. In the sketch, click Sketch tab Create Panel Project Cut Edges.
  4. Select the composite feature.
  5. Curves are generated at the intersection of the sketch plane and any surface that crossed the plane. The curves update when the sketch is moved.

Project Flat Pattern (Sheet Metal Parts)

  1. In a 2D sketch in a sheet metal part file, click a face or work plane to set the sketch plane.
  2. Click Sketch tab Create panel Create panel > Project Flat Pattern .
  3. In the graphics window, select one or more faces to project into the active sketch plane. The faces must connect to the sketch plane with bends and lie on the same side of the sheet metal as the sketch plane.
  4. To finish, right-click and choose Done, press Esc, or click another command.

Project to 3D Sketch

  1. In a 2D sketch, click a face or work plane to set the sketch plane.
  2. Click Sketch tab Create panel Project to 3D Sketch .

The Project to 3D Sketch dialog box opens and the Faces selection tool is active by default.

  3. Click in the graphics window to select one or more faces that you want to project.
  4. (Optional) In the Project to 3D Sketch dialog box:
    • Deselect Project to disable the projection of 2D geometry onto faces.
    • Turn Preview on and off to view or not view the projected geometry while you modify the 2D source sketch.
  5. Click OK. When you finish, a new 3D sketch contains the projected geometry.

Project DWG Geometry

  1. In a 2D sketch, click a face or work plane to set the sketch plane.
  2. Click Sketch tab Create panel Project DWG Geometry .
  3. Select the geometry to project. Select one of 3 options:
    • Single geometry
    • Connected geometry: Closed loop and/or open loop.
    • Geometry block.
  4. Single geometry and Geometry block supports window selection.

  5. Note: Application Options Sketch Autoproject edges during curve creation must be enabled.

The following types of DWG geometry are inferred and will be projected automatically after sketch creation if Application Options Sketch Autoproject edges during curve creation is enabled:

    • The following points: Single points, Start/ Mid /End points, Center point of arcs and circle,
    • Arcs
    • Circles
    • Lines
    • Polylines
Note: A point from a segment of a DWG polyline is inferred and projected. To project the entire polyline, use Project DWG Geometry.
When done, select Cancel or right-click and select OK.

After you project DWG block geometry you can extrude the DWG geometry and create 3D features as desired..
