Used for lining steel or cast steel bushings and shells. The advantage of these compositions is an excellent resistance to seizing, excellent adaptability, and absorbency of foreign particles. Tin composition has greater resistance against corrosion. The lower corrosion resistance of lead compositions requires using oils containing corrosion inhibitors. Lead compositions have rather lower value of hardness at higher temperatures than tin compositions. Their operating temperature must not exceed 100 °C. They also have a lower disposition to harm counter face, but they easily coat faces with composition micro volumes.
The insufficiency of the composition is a great decrease of function properties with growing temperature. Other insufficiencies, low strength, and low fatigue limit, can be partially compensated by selecting the smallest lining thickness. The recommended surface texture for bushings is 0.4, for shafts 0.2 microns. Low value of the composition hardness allows using shafts from soft steel. The maximum load capacity ranges from 40 MPa to 45 MPa at circumferential speed ranging from 1 to 2 m/sec. Maximum loading up to 5 MPa is indicated for the speed of 10 m/sec.
Thin-wall linings (lower than 0.3 mm) have greater life and that is why they are used, particularly in the automobile industry. Thick-wall linings are used for heavy bearings, for example, railway carriages.
