About proximity criteria

Proximity criteria is used as follows:

When the surface is probed, PowerInspect locates the following points:

The centre of the stylus. This acts as the centre of the radial search for a contact. The radius of the search is equal to the stylus radius plus the specified Proximity criteria.

The measured point displayed in the Report tab. It is the nearest nominal point on the CAD surface within the boundary of the radial search. PowerInspect uses it to calculate the surface normal.

The contact point on the part surface. This is found by projecting the stylus radius along the surface normal. PowerInspect uses this point to calculate the deviations (dL, dX, and dY) between the model surface and the part surface.

Note: To measure the bottom of a surface, select the General tab, and specify a Surface offset equivalent to the surface depth. The measured point then reports the position of the bottom of the surface:
