Video: Create Multistory Stairs

Create a stair element to span multiple levels in the model.

This video demonstrates the following:

  1. Create a multistory stair from an existing stair.
  2. Change level heights and see the groupings.
  3. Make changes to individual flights within the multistory stair.
Note: This video was recorded using Revit 2018. When using a newer software release, you may notice differences in functionality and user interface.

A multistory stair is used to represent vertical circulation in a model. Stairs are placed at each selected level in the model. Stairs connecting levels that share a common height are grouped together. All of the stairs in a group can be edited as one. The changes are applied to all of the grouped stair components in the multistory stair.

Create a multistory stair by connecting levels to a stair element. This can be done as you create the stair or by connecting an existing stair to levels in the model. In this example we will create a multistory stair from an existing stair. In an elevation or section view, select the stair and click Select Levels. Click Connect Levels and select the levels used for the multistory stair. Click Finish. The multistory stair is created.

When level heights are changed, the multistory stair is kept together. For example, if the first floor height is changed, the first stair is altered as required and un-pins from the original stair group. It still remains part of the multistory stair. The upper 3 stories remain pinned and grouped because they share the same level-to-level height. Use the tab key to select individual stairs within a multistory stair.

When an unpinned member of the multistory stair is changed, the pinned elements are un-affected. When one member of pinned elements is changed, all stairs in the group are changed.

Edit multistory stair layout by using the tab key to select an individual stair or stair group. Then click Edit Stair. Make modifications as required and click Finish. Your changes are applied to stair elements in the multistory stair.

Individual stair elements can be tagged in the multistory stair object by clicking each stair in the multistory element.

Use the multistory stair tools to streamline your workflow when creating stairs that span multiple floors in your model.
