Video: Create a Tag Family

Create a tag family from a template and add labels to the tag to read parameters from the tagged element..

This video demonstrates the following:

1. Examine parameters tagged in existing tags.
2. Start a new generic tag and change category to structural columns.
3. Add a label to the tag.
4. Add geometry to the family.
5. Add tag to the project and tag a column.

Note: This video was recorded using Revit 2021. When using a newer software release, you may notice differences in functionality and user interface.

In Revit, tags give you a way to display selected properties of an element. Tags are associated with specific categories and then use labels in the tag family to read specific parameters from the element. For example, the door tag is displaying the Mark parameter from the door, and the wall tag is displaying the Type Mark parameter of the wall.

For this example, we want to create a tag for columns. When we try to tag a column, you see no tag is loaded in the model. We will create a new tag family for the column. The tag family will report out the type mark and height of the column.

On the File tab, click New > Family. Select the Generic Tag template and click open. Now change the category so the tag can be used on the columns. Click Family Categories and Parameters, choose Structural Column Tags from the list, and click Ok. This sets the tag family to be associated with Structural Columns in your model and allows it to tag those elements.

Add labels to pull parameter values from the column into the tag. On the Create tab, click Label. Click in the canvas to position the label. The Edit Label dialog lists the parameters associated with Structural Columns. Choose the Type Mark parameter and click the control to add it to the label. A sample value is displayed after the label is added. The other columns are used if you are creating a label with more than one parameter. In this example, each label is only using one parameter, so these columns are not used. Click Ok to add the label.

Position the label and add a triangle to the label family. Then another label is added to report the height of the tagged column. Once the tag labels and geometry are complete, delete the note from the family and load it into your model.

Place the column tag, and the labels are resolved to the parameter values of the tagged element.

Tags with labels allow you to display parameter values consistently and quickly in views of your model.
