Video: Collaborate with Others Using a Data Exchange

Share portions of your model with a Data Exchange. Collaborators use the Data Exchange to complete their work without the need to download the entire model.

This video demonstrates the following:

  1. Set up a 3D view for a Data Exchange.
  2. Publish the model to Autodesk Construction Cloud.
  3. Create the Data Exchange.
Note: This video was recorded using Revit 2023. When using a newer software release, you may notice differences in functionality and user interface.

Data Exchanges give you a way to share your work with collaborators outside of Revit. A data exchange is made from a model published to Autodesk Construction Cloud. The Data Exchange contains only the information needing to be shared rather than the entire Revit model.

As an example, you are working with a stair fabricator who is working in Inventor. You want to share the stair tower portion of your model with them, but they do not need the entire model to accomplish their work. This is an opportunity to share work with a data exchange.

First create a specific view, or views, in the Revit model containing the elements you are sharing. Data exchanges contain, visible model geometry, type and instance element properties, room data, levels, and grids. A section box is used to limit the geometry in the data exchange to an area just around the stairs. Geometry un-necessary to the stair fabrication, such as the wall are hidden in the view.

On the Collaborate tab, Click publish settings and create a publication view set containing the views needed for the data exchange. With a specific set created, it will be easier to re-publish when changes are made to the model. Once complete, the model is saved and published to the cloud.

Select and view the file on Autodesk Construction Cloud. Click the ellipses in the view list to create a Data Exchange from the view. Now the data exchange can be accessed in applications other than Revit. When changes to your Revit model are published, the Data Exchange will be updated along with it.

Use Data Exchanges from Revit to share portions of your models with collaborators.
