Video: Change Dimension Values

change the value of a permanent dimension by moving an element or creating an override.

This video demonstrates the following:

  1. Move an element using a permanent dimension value.
  2. Override a dimension value with a non-numerical value.
  3. Add a suffix to a dimension value.
Note: This video was recorded using Revit LT 2020. When using a newer software release, you may notice differences in functionality and user interface.

Once dimensions are placed you may need to alter their values based on the design. There are 2 ways to change the values, change the position of the dimensioned element, or override the value.

In this example the open shelving area really needs to be 500mm deep. To change the value to 500 on the dimension, you must either move the outer wall or the wall at the back of the shelves. You can't select the dimension and change the value, because it would not be clear which wall needed to move. Instead, select the wall you want to move, in this case the wall at the back of the shelves.

Now the text of the dimension string becomes editable. Change the 495mm measurement to the desired value of 500.

A dimension override allows you to replace the value in the dimension with a non numerical value. For example the powder room in this plan is existing, and the washer dryer closet and shelves are new construction. The dimension value of 1495 should be replaced with text indicating it is "Existing".

Select the dimension string and then click the 1495 value. In the dialog, set the dimension value to replace with text and provide a text value of "Existing". Click ok to apply the override to the dimension value.

Using the same technique add prefixes, suffixes, or additional information above or below a dimension value. Here we need to add a +/- to the 1716 dimension. Select the 1716 value. This time in the dialog, the actual value will be used, but in the lower section of the dialog a suffix value of +/- is applied.

Use these techniques to have more control of the values displayed in your dimension after you have placed them in your models.
