When creating a model, you can choose to use a template or default settings as a starting point.
Important: Revit models are not backwards-compatible. When you create or modify a model using the current release of the software, you cannot open the model later using a previous release.
To create a model using a template
- On the Home page, under Models, click New.
As an alternative, from the ribbon, click File tabNew (Project).
- In the New Project dialog, under Template file, do one of the following:
- Select a template from the list.
- Click Browse, navigate to the desired template (an RTE file), and click Open.
Revit LT provides several templates, which reside in the Templates folder in the following location:
-
%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Autodesk\RLT 2024 Release
As an alternative, your BIM manager may have set up templates for you to choose from.
- For Create new, click Project.
- Click OK.
The software creates a new model, using the selected template as a starting point.
To create a model using default settings (no template)
- On the Home page, under Models, click New.
As an alternative, from the ribbon, click File tabNew (Project).
- In the New Project dialog, under Template file, select None.
- For Create new, click Project.

The software creates a new model, using default settings as a starting point.
