Numbering Schemes

Numbering Schemes let you configure how files, items, and change orders are named when they are added to a vault.

Note: This feature is available in Autodesk Vault Professional.

You can select from three existing schemes or you can create custom numbering schemes using one or more parameters. Item numbers are generated based on the user-defined properties mapped to the Number system property in the Property Definitions dialog. User-defined propertyy mappings will take precedence over numbering schemes when creating Items.

Mapped	Item number free text scheme.
Sequential	File or Item names are generated sequentially. This is the default number scheme and cannot be edited or deleted.
ECO	Change Order names are generated based on a defined fixed text, a delimiter, and an auto-generated number.
Custom	Object names are generated based on a custom design. This feature provides the flexibility to create a numbering scheme where the name carries information about the object.

Numbering field essentials

Each separate part in a file number is called a field. There are five basic fields:

	Example	Description
Auto-generated	1001, 1002, 1003	Creates a sequential file number automatically each time an object is created. No user input is required.
Delimiter	-	A single character, such as a dash that separates each field.
Fixed Text	2004	Use this for a value you do not want changed and want to have in each object number.
Free Text	prototype	Creates a free form field so users can enter additional information
Pre-defined List	blue, yellow, green	Provides a list of choices to the user each time an object is created.
Workgroup Label	WG1	The workgroup ID for the workgroup in which the number is generated.

Numbering Generator

There are tree types of number generators:

Simple Number Generator	It produces numbers based on the other information provided in the numbering scheme.
Centralized Number Generator	It avoids duplicated generated number at the same time in a replicated environment.
Custom Generator	User specified numbering generators configured on the Vault server.

General numbering scheme rules

Only one auto-generated field per numbering scheme sequence is allowed.
A user-defined numbering scheme can only be edited or deleted when it is not in use. That is, the user defined numbering scheme has not been used or all the objects using it have been deleted.
The sequential numbering scheme cannot be edited or deleted.
