Step 2: Back Up or Restore a Vault

The second screen of the Back Up and Restore Wizard lets you continue with the Back Up or Restore process you elected in the previous step .

If Backing Up a Vault

If you chose Back Up on the Startup Screen for the Back Up and Restore Wizard, you are taken to a screen that lets you determine the location for the backed up data. If you are running Autodesk Vault Professional, you can also select whether to perform a full or incremental backup.

  1. Note: A log file named Backup History.txt is created for both full and incremental backup operations. The file contains a chronological list of all backups created since the last full backup. This log file is included in the directory containing the backup.
  2. Select either Full Backup or Incremental Backup. If a full backup has not yet been performed, Incremental Backup is not available.

Note: Incremental Backup and Restore is available in Autodesk Vault Professional.

Full Backup backs up all data in the file store and database for the selected vault. Perform a full backup:

    • Before you perform an incremental backup for the first time
    • If a vault or library has been added to or removed from the Autodesk Data Management Server
    • If no changes have occurred

Incremental Backup backs up only new or modified files in the file store as well as any changes to user accounts. Files and libraries that have not changed are not included in an incremental backup. Because standard libraries do not change, they are also not included in incremental backup.

Following an upgrade to the Autodesk Data Management Server, an incremental backup cannot be performed until a full backup is performed again.

  3. Specify the location to store the backed up data. To browse for a location, click ... and then locate a directory using the file browser. An incremental backup folder is named using the same naming convention as full backups, with the addition of _INCxx, where xx indicates the increment number.

Note: The destination folder for an incremental backup does not need to be the same as the folder containing the full backup.
  4. Select vaults and libraries to be backed up. To select vaults or libraries, click and then select the vaults and libraries for backup. You can use Select/Unselect all checkbox to quickly select or unselect all vaults and libraries for backup.

Note: This option is available in Vault Professional and for Full Backup selection only.
  5. Turn on the "Validate file stores" check box to validate all the files recorded in the database against the files in the file store. The validation uses a checksum of the files to check that they are identical to the file when checked in to Vault.

Note: The Validate file stores check box is selected by default. The option to skip file store validation is only available in Autodesk Vault Professional.
  6. Turn on the "Validate the backed up files" check box to verify the archive is good once it is created.

  7. By default standard Content Center libraries are included in the backup process. To exclude standard Content Center libraries from the back up, turn off the "Backup Standard Content Center Libraries" check box.

  8. Turn on the "Backup databases" check box to exclude the backup of any files.

Note: This option is available in Vault Professional and for Full Backup selection only.
  9. By default a backup will wait until all files that need to be replicated are replicated before starting. Turn on the "Ignore non-replicated files" check box to start the backup without waiting for these files to replicate.

Note: This option is disabled if the Backup databases only check box is selected.
  10. Click Finish.

Note: If "Backup databases" options is checked, or not all Vaults and Libraries are selected, then the full backup can't be a base for incremental backup since it's incomplete.

If Restoring a Vault

If you chose to Restore on the Startup Screen for the Back Up and Restore Wizard, you are taken to a screen that lets you determine which saved Vault data you want to restore. If you are running Autodesk Vault Professional, you can also select whether to perform a full or incremental restore.

Note: A backup created on an Autodesk Data Management Server that has Incremental Backup and Restore cannot be restored on an Autodesk Data Management Server that does not have Incremental Backup and Restore.
Note: Access to the vault database is blocked during this task. Data management clients cannot access the database until the task is complete.
  1. Select either Full Restore or Incremental Restore.

Note: A full restore overwrites all of the data sets and file store for the selected vault.
  2. Select a backup directory to restore data sets and file stores.

Note: Incremental backups can only be restored in chronological order. An older incremental backup cannot be restored once a newer incremental backup has been restored.
  3. If you are performing a full restore, select whether the database is to be restored to the default location or a different location. If you choose Select Restore Location:

    • Specify a target directory for the database.
    • Specify a target directory for the log file.
Note: This option is not available when performing an incremental restore.
  4. If you are performing a full restore, select whether the file store is to be restored to the default location or a different location. If you choose Select Restore Location, specify a target directory for the file store. This option is not available when performing an incremental restore.

    • If you want to use the existing file store files during restore, turn on the "Use existing file store files" check box and ensure you have copied the correct file stores to the destination folder.
    • Turn on the "Validate file store" check box to validate all the files recorded in the database against the files in the file store. Select one of these option:
      • Standard - Validation uses a checksum of the files to check that they are identical to the file when checked in to Vault.
      • Quick - Validation doesn't run a checksum and only checks for the existence of the file at the expected path.
Note: The Validate file store check box is selected by default. The option to skip file store validation is only available in Autodesk Vault Professional.
  5. Click Finish.

The vault data is automatically migrated when it is restored using the server console. If you are restoring the data using the command line, you must migrate the data after it is restored.
