You can open any Autodesk Inventor file stored in a vault without leaving the Inventor application by using the Open from Vault feature on the Inventor Vault Add-in.
Select Open from the Vault ribbon.
Under iMate: You can Interactively place with iMates or Automatically generate iMates on place
In the Select File From Vault dialog box, locate and select one or more files in the current project.
The historical revisions feature applies to Autodesk Vault Professional.
From the Look in list, select a folder from the vault. The contents of the folder are displayed in the file list. Select a file from the list.
From the Saved Shortcuts, select a vault shortcut. Any shortcut that you have created are listed under My Shortcuts and shortcuts that are set by the administrator are listed under Distributed Shortcuts. If the shortcut is to a specific file, the file is selected in the file list. If the shortcut is to a directory in the vault, the files in the directory are displayed in the file list. Select a file.
From the Saved Searches, select a search. Any search folders you have created using the Find dialog box are listed under My Searches and searches that are set by the administrator are listed under Distributed Searches. The search is performed and the results of the search are displayed in the file list. Select a file.
Autodesk Vault Professional users. From the Revision list, select the revision of the file. If multiple files are selected, this feature is disabled.
Autodesk Vault Professional users. Select the Released Biased check box to open the released version of the selected file revision instead of the latest version.
From the Open drop down list, choose to either check out and open the file, check out and open all the related files, or to open the file without checking it out from the vault. Click Open. The selected file is opened.
In Autodesk Vault Professional edition, the Check Out All option is disabled if any children of the selected files may not be the latest revision.

AnyCAD for Inventor allows you to reference a part or assembly file that is one year newer than the version you are on. Since AnyCAD files are not part of all the Inventor workflows, these files are skipped during processing to avoid any performance issues. To include AnyCAD files during check in/check out or from the Vault browser, you need to update the files before check in.
Perform the following steps to update AnyCAD files:
In the Inventor browser, expand the root AnyCAD node so they become loaded.
You can do one of the following:
Overwrite the local copy with new ones.
Check in the file.
Open Drawing command is available from both Inventor model browser and Vault browser.
If you open historical revision design file in Inventor, set Released Biased flag On in the "Open Drawing" command to find the revision associated drawing file.
If you open historical revision design file in Inventor, set Released Biased flag Off in the "Open Drawing" command to find the latest revision associated drawing file.
