NEW (Command)

Starts a new drawing.

The behavior of the NEW command is determined by the STARTUP system variable.

If the FILEDIA system variable is set to 0 instead of 1, a Command prompt is displayed. If you set FILEDIA to 0, this prompt is displayed regardless of the Startup setting.

Default Drawing Templates Location

The default drawing templates location used by the NEW command is based on the context of the current open drawing. When the current drawing is

  • Open from an Autodesk Docs project - Location from which you can choose a drawing template file from is defined by the Drawing Template File Location setting under Project Settings or My Settings in the Options dialog box. Once started, the support files for the new drawing are obtained from the paths defined under Project Settings, then My Settings and Classic AutoCAD Settings.
  • Not open from an Autodesk Docs project, project has not been set up for Connected support files, or no drawing is open - Location from which you can choose a drawing template file from is defined by the Drawing Template File Location setting of the current AutoCAD user profile in the Options dialog box. Once started, the support files for the new drawing are obtained from the current AutoCAD user profile.
