The RefDes is optional at the part level, but required for each part occurrence in an assembly.

In the Part Properties dialog box, click the General tab:
Add a unique reference designator when accessing the dialog from within an assembly.
Add a place holder or optional reference designator when accessing the dialog from within a part.
Part Name Displays the part name, which is the Autodesk Inventor file name. This setting cannot be edited within Cable and Harness properties.
Part Number Displays the part number, which is the Autodesk Inventor part number. This setting cannot be edited within Cable and Harness properties.
RefDes Sets an unique identifier that maps the part to the schematic design. The RefDes is optional at the part level, but required for each part occurrence.
Gender Displays the appropriate gender information of male, female, or none for a connector. This is especially important when exporting data as .xml to AutoCAD Electrical.
If appropriate, click the Custom tab to add new properties or modify existing properties.
To add new properties, enter a Name, Type, and Value, and then click Add.
To modify existing properties, select the property to modify, change the settings as needed, and then click Modify.
Name Displays the entered property name. Click in the input area to enter a new property, or if available, click the arrow to select from the list.
Type Data type for the selected property. Click the arrow to select an appropriate data type from the list.
Value Sets the value for the selected property.
Add Adds a new property to the list.
Modify Changes the selected property's name, type, or value.
Delete Removes the selected property from the list.
Click Apply to continue modifying or adding properties or OK to finish.
If a custom property value is overridden on the part occurrence, the part-level value appears in the lower-left side of the dialog box when you select the property name in the table. You can restore this value if desired.
In the browser, double-click the harness assembly.
In the browser, right-click the part occurrence, and then select Harness Properties from the context menu.
On the Part Properties dialog box Custom tab, select any custom property displayed with a dark background.
Select a property whose value has been overridden.
Right-click, and then select Restore.
Click Apply to continue restoring part-level properties or OK to finish.
