Use the MEP Sizing Calculator

Use the MEP Sizing Calculator to define sizing criteria and design constraints for selected duct or pipe. Apply filters to generate a table of duct or pipe sizes that satisfy the specified requirements.

The MEP Sizing Calculator eliminates the need to use external sizing tools during preliminary design, including physical ones, like the Ductulator for duct sizing.

Open the MEP Sizing palette

  1. Select duct or pipe in the model.
  2. Click View tabWindows panelUser Interface drop-downMEP Sizing Calculator.
    Tip: In the drawing area, you can also right-click and click Browsers > MEP Sizing Calculator.

    The MEP Sizing palette opens.

Use Duct Sizing

  1. Under Sizing Method, specify whether Volumetric Flow is calculated based on the selected duct or user defined.
  2. Use the check boxes to size duct by Friction, Velocity, Aspect Ratio, or a combination of these. Use the sliders to specify a tolerance.
  3. Specify whether Roughness is calculated based on the selected duct or user defined. Roughness is derived from the duct properties.
  4. Under Constraints, enable the Restrict Height or Restrict Width checkboxes to filter the results in the table by minimum and maximum values for rectangular and oval duct or Restrict Inner Diameter for minimum and maximum values for round duct.
  5. Enable the Show Best Sizes checkbox to filter the smallest height and width while still fulfilling sizing method inputs.

    Sizes that meet the sizing requirements are listed in the table.

  6. Click the Swap Height and Width button to swap the values for height and width displayed in the table. Click the arrow on the right of each column heading to sort the entries in the column in ascending or descending order.
  7. Select a size and click Apply to resize the selected duct.

Use Pipe Sizing

  1. Under Sizing Method, specify whether Volumetric Flow is calculated based on the selected pipe or user defined.
  2. Use the check boxes to size pipe by Friction, Velocity, or both. Use the sliders to specify a tolerance.
  3. Specify whether Roughness, Density, and Viscosity calculated based on the selected pipe or user defined. Roughness is derived from the pipe properties. Density and viscosity are derived from the fluid properties.
  4. Under Constraints, enable the Restrict Inner Diameter checkbox to filter the results in the table by minimum and maximum values.
  5. Enable the Show Best Sizes checkbox to filter the smallest diameter while still fulfilling sizing method inputs.

    Sizes that meet the sizing requirements are listed in the table. The available sizes listed are derived from the Mechanical Settings and the Fabrication Parts catalog based on maximum friction per length and/or velocity.

  6. Select a size and click Apply to resize the selected pipe.
