Camera Tonemapping Improvements
VRED 2027.1 introduces a modern, physically based camera tonemapper inspired by recent SIGGRAPH research, delivering more perceptually accurate and consistent results that better match real-world cameras and displays.
The new approach improves highlight handling, maintains color fidelity at extreme luminance levels, and ensures predictable output across both SDR and HDR displays without manual curve tweaking.
New Uniform Perceptual option for the Physical Camera
The new model uses physically based principles instead of the ad hoc curves and manual adjustments commonly required by traditional tonemappers. This results in more consistent image appearance across different lighting conditions and display types.
Key benefits include:
- Improved highlight handling: A smooth, filmic shoulder preserves bright details without harsh clipping, which is especially important for HDR content.
- Perceptually uniform color response: The advanced ICtCp color space maintains color accuracy and saturation even at extreme luminance levels.
- Consistent SDR and HDR output: The tonemapper adapts to different display peak luminance levels, ensuring predictable results across devices.
