When closed geometry is drawn in a clockwise direction, the terrain will step up along the outside of the geometry. If drawn in an anti-clockwise direction, the terrain will step up towards the inside of the geometry. Either method can be reversed from the Retaining Wall Properties panel.
When selected:
The higher side of the retaining wall is displayed as a shaded line.
The thin line represents the lower side of the retaining wall.
This orientation can be reversed using the Reverse Kerb property of the Retaining Wall Properties panel.
