Troubleshooting Revit Public MCP Server

The following table lists common issues you may encounter when using the Revit MCP Server and possible solutions.

Symptom Likely cause Fix
The Revit MCP Server does not respond to prompts. Revit is currently in an editor mode or has a blocking dialog open. Finish or cancel the current editing operation and close any open dialog boxes before sending another prompt. The Modify tool does not block communication.
No tools appear in the AI client. The MCP Server configuration is incomplete or the AI client has not reloaded the configuration. Verify the MCP configuration file and restart the AI client. Check that the configuration file contains valid JSON. In JSON, each backslash in a Windows file path must be written as a double backslash.
Queries return no results. The query criteria are too restrictive or the requested elements do not exist in the current model. Broaden the query criteria or verify that the specified view, category, or parameter values are correct.
The AI response is incorrect or unexpected. Large language models (LLMs) can generate inaccurate or incomplete responses. Verify AI-generated results before making changes to your Revit model.
Revit does not respond to prompts. Autodesk Revit is not running or no model is open. Start Autodesk Revit 2027.2 and open a model before sending prompts from your AI client.
Configuration changes do not take effect. The AI client is still using the previous configuration, or the configuration was added to a different file than the one the AI client reads. Restart Claude Desktop or Cursor after updating the MCP configuration. In Claude Desktop, turn on Developer mode if needed, then go to Settings > Developer and select Edit Config to confirm which configuration file the application is using. For more information, see the Model Context Protocol documentation.
The AI client cannot connect to the Revit Public MCP Server. The Revit Public MCP Server is not installed or the configured executable path is incorrect. Verify that the Revit Public MCP Server is installed and that the configured executable path is correct. Confirm that the Windows file path uses double backslashes (\\). A correct path still fails to load if it is written with single backslashes.
Expected tools are not available after installation. The installed Revit Public MCP Server configuration does not include the tools you are trying to use. Verify that you installed the Revit Public MCP Server configuration that provides the capabilities you need.
