Specify objectives in the Generative Design workspace

Learn how to specify the optimization goals and limits for the generative design process.

  1. On the Define tab, click Design Criteria > Objectives objectives icon.

The Objectives and Limits dialog opens.

  2. Select one of the following objectives:

    • Minimize Mass. Minimizes the mass so that your design has the lowest possible mass and can carry the applied loads.
    • Maximize Stiffness. Maximizes the stiffness of the design based on the applied structural constraints and loads.
  3. Specify the Safety Factor for the selected objective.

  4. In addition, if you select the Maximize Stiffness as your optimization objective, you need to specify the Mass Target. The mass target ensures that your design reaches the desired mass.

  5. (Optional) Click Modal Frequency and specify Min. First Mode Frequency [Hz] to define the lowest frequency at which the design's response occurs.

Note: The First Mode Frequency value should be greater than the frequency of the design when vibrating.
  6. (Optional) Click Displacement and select Global or Local displacement type to include displacement limits in the generative design process.

    • Global - Specify the maximum displacement value for X, Y, and/or Z directions.

    • Local - Select a location in your design such as face, edge, or vertex that belongs to the preserve geometry. Specify the maximum displacement value for X, Y, and Z directions.

By default, the X, Y, and Z buttons are selected. Deselect them as needed.

Tip: To add a location for the local displacement, click add icon and specify the maximum displacement value for X, Y, or Z directions of the location.
  7. (Optional) Click Buckling and specify the Safety Factor value that is sufficient to avoid buckling of the design.

  8. Click OK.

Tip: To modify the specified objectives in the study, mouse over the Objectives node in the browser, and then click edit browser icon.
