Move or copy geometry

Learn how to move or copy components, bodies, faces, or sketch objects in Fusion.

Note: To duplicate a body without moving its location, follow the instructions in the Create a copy of a body section below.

Create an identical, linked copy of a component

  1. In the Browser, select an internal or external component to copy.

  2. Right-click the component, then select Copy.

  3. Right-click an internal component to use as the parent for the copy, then select Paste.

    A copy of the component displays in the Browser, nested within the internal component you right-clicked.

    The Move/Copy dialog displays.

  4. Optional: Move or rotate the component:

    • Move the component: Drag the distance manipulator handles in the canvas or specify exact values for X Distance, Y Distance, and Z Distance.
    • Rotate the component: Drag the rotation manipulator handles in the canvas or specify exact values for X Angle, Y Angle, and Z Angle.
  5. Optional: Check the box next to Capture Position to capture the new position of the component.

  6. Click OK.

A duplicate component displays in the canvas at the location you specified.

The new component is linked to the original component as an identical duplicate. When you modify the original component or the new component, both components reflect the changes.

Create a unique copy of an internal component

  1. In the Browser, select an internal component to copy.

  2. Right-click the component, then select Copy.

  3. Right-click an internal component to use as the parent for the copy, then select Paste.

  4. Optional: Move or rotate the component.

  5. Optional: Check the box next to Capture Position to capture the new position of the component.

  6. Click OK.

A duplicate component displays in the canvas at the location you specified.

The new component is not linked to the original component. When you modify the original component or the new component, the changes are unique to that component.

Create a copy of a body

  1. In the Browser, expand the Bodies folder, then select the body to copy.

  2. Right-click the body, then select Copy.

  3. Right-click the Bodies folder in any internal component, then select Paste.

  4. Optional: Move or rotate the body.

  5. Click OK.

A duplicate body displays in the canvas at the location you specified.

The new body is not linked to the original body. When you modify the original body or the new body, the changes are unique to that body.

Note: You cannot copy bodies from an internal component to an external component.

Use the Move/Copy tool to move or move and copy objects

  1. Click Design > Solid > Modify > Move/Copy move icon.

    The Move/Copy dialog displays.

    Optional: Check the box next to Create Copy to create a copy of the selected object instead of moving the original.

  2. In the dialog, select the Move Object type:

    • Components: Move all objects within the selected component.
    • Bodies: Move a specific body.
    • Faces: Move a specific face.
    • Sketch Objects: Move specific sketch objects.
  3. Select an object:

    In the canvas, hover over the object and the manipulator displays. Click to place the manipulator pivot point.

  4. Optional: Click Set Pivot to adjust the pivot point of the manipulator.

    In the canvas, hover over the geometry you want to snap to, then click to place the pivot point, or enter exact values in the dialog.

  5. Select the Move Type and adjust its associated settings, or use the manipulator handles to move the selected object directly in the canvas:

    • Free Move: Move along X/Y/Z axes and rotate around X/Y/Z axes.
      • X/Y/Z Distance: Specify the distance to move along each axis.
      • X/Y/Z Angle: Specify the angle to rotate around each axis.
    • Translate: Move along X/Y/Z axes.
      • Direction
        • Component XYZ: Specify X/Y/Z Distance.
        • Design XYZ: Specify X/Y/Z Distance.
        • Pick Direction: Select Edge Axis to move along, then specify Distance to move.
    • Rotate: Rotate around X/Y/Z axes.
      • Axis: Select the axis to rotate around.
      • Angle: Specify the angle to rotate.
    • Point to Point: Move from a point that you select to another point that you select in the canvas.
      • Origin Point: Specify the point to start from.
      • Target Point: Specify the point to move to.
    • Point to Position: Move from a point that you select in the canvas to a location that you specify.
      • Coordinate Space
        • Component: Use the coordinates of the component.
        • Design: Use the coordinates of the design.
      • Position X/Y/Z: Specify the new X/Y/Z position in the selected coordinate space.
      • Reset Position
  6. Optional (components only): Check the box next to Capture Position to capture the new position of the component.

  7. Optional: Check Create Copy to create a copy of the selection and move it.

  8. Click OK.

The original or copied object displays in the new location in the canvas.

If you used Translate, a Move feature is created in the timeline.
