Assign a point mass automatically

Each Point Mass that you define is listed in the browser under a Point Masses node. These instructions assume you are setting up one of the following study types:

thermal stress icon Thermal stress

static stress icon Static stress

nonlinear static stress icon Nonlinear static stress

modal frequencies icon Modal frequencies

event simulation icon Quasi-static Event simulation

event simulation icon Dynamic Event simulation

Note: Assign a gravity value so that the mass results in a weight load.
  1. In the SIMULATION workspace, select Point Mass (Auto) from the LOAD drop-down menu. The Bodies selection mode is active initially.
  2. Select the body or bodies that you want to replace with a Point Mass representation.
  3. Click Select to the right of Geometries. This action terminates the Bodies selection mode and prepares for you to specify the faces where the mass is to be attached to other components.
  4. Select faces where the Point Mass is attached to the remaining parts of the model.
  5. The program calculates the mass value automatically based on the volumes and densities of the selected bodies. However, if you choose to, you can override the mass value:
    1. Optionally, click the Override Units icon to choose a different mass specification unit (g, kg, slug, and so on).
    2. Optionally, type in the Mass value or choose a recently entered mass value from the drop-down list.
    3. If you later decide to restore the automatically calculated mass, click the Reset icon. Only the mass value is reset. The selected bodies and attachment faces remain unchanged.
  6. Click OK to apply the Point Mass and close the dialog.
