Apply a structural load

These instructions assume you have created one of the following study types:

Study Types that offer this load option
thermal stress icon Thermal stress static stress icon Static stress
modal frequencies icon Modal frequencies structural buckling icon Structural buckling
shape optimization icon Shape optimization nonlinear static stress icon Nonlinear static stress
  1. Click structural loads icon (Simulation workspace > Setup tab > Loads panel > Structural Loads).

  2. In the Structural Loads dialog, select the Type from the drop-down menu.

  3. On your model, select the Target face(s), edge(s), or vertices. The Target entities you can select depend on the load Type you choose.

Note: As soon as you select your first model entity, the dialog expands to provide more options. The options depend on the load Type you select.
  4. Where applicable, choose the load direction (normal load direction icon Normal, angle load direction icon Angle, or load direction - vectors and components icon Vector).

    1. normal load direction icon Normal applies the load Normal to the selected face(s).

    2. angle load direction icon Angle applies the load according to the angle you select.

      Either

      1. In the Structural loads dialog, click select icon Select associated with Direction Reference, then on your model, select a face or edge for the reference direction.

      Or

      1. Enter values for the X Angle, Y Angle, and Z Angle

      Or

      1. Use the manipulators to alter the direction.
    3. load direction - vectors and components icon Vector) applies the specified load(s) along the vectors you choose.

      1. Enter the required load in each vector direction.
  5. Where applicable, choose the Reference, or Direction Reference.

  6. Optionally, click change units icon Override Units to choose alternative units for inputting parameters.

  7. Specify the magnitude and direction of the load or its global X, Y, and Z components.

Note: For Hydrostatic Pressures, specify the Fluid Type or Density and ensure that gravity is enabled and correctly oriented.
  8. Optionally, click flip direction icon Flip Direction to reverse the load direction.

  9. Click OK to apply the load and close the Structural Loads dialog.

Note:

To find information about structural load types available in the Generative Design workspace, see Apply loads.
