This topic covers how to start conversations, write effective prompts, review your chat history, and provide feedback when using Autodesk Assistant.
Autodesk Assistant helps you get answers, guidance, and perform actions in supported Autodesk products. This topic explains how to start a conversation, adjust Tech Preview, write effective prompts, review your chat history, and provide feedback to improve the Assistant.
To begin using Autodesk Assistant, open the Assistant panel in your Autodesk product and enter a prompt.
Once the panel is open:
Type your prompt in the chat field.
Press Enter or click Send.
The Assistant responds with an answer, guidance, or action.
You can continue the conversation by asking follow-up questions or starting a new topic.
Tech Preview gives you early access to additional Autodesk Assistant capabilities. You can choose to use Tech Preview when you first open Autodesk Assistant in your product. Feature availability may change as capabilities move in or out of Tech Preview.
For details on what Tech Preview includes, see What can Autodesk Assistant do in InfoWater Pro.
When Tech Preview is off, you can still ask questions and get answers from Autodesk product documentation (http://help.autodesk.com).
To check whether Tech Preview is on, click Tech Preview at the top of the Assistant panel.
From there, you can turn Tech Preview off if you prefer more limited capabilities. You can turn it back on anytime in Settings.
Your Tech Preview setting applies to the current product. If you use Autodesk Assistant in multiple products, you can choose your preference for each one.
The quality of the Assistant's response depends on how you ask your question. Use these tips to get better results.
Instead of vague questions, provide details about what you need.
| Less effective | More effective |
|---|---|
| "How do I do this?" | "How do I add leakage to my model?" |
| "Fix this" | "Why is my model struggling to converge?" |
If your question relates to something specific, mention it.
| Less effective | More effective |
|---|---|
| "Apply a Map Theme" | "Apply the Junction_pressure Map Theme" |
| "My map won't update" | "I see an error message about plugin datasource. What do I do?" |
Break complex requests into separate questions for clearer answers.
| Less effective | More effective |
|---|---|
| "Create sheets for all views and then export them to PDF to send to the client" | "Create sheets for all floor plan views" (then follow up with additional requests) |
If you do not get the response you expected, try asking the same question in a different way.
Autodesk Assistant keeps a history of your conversations so you can reference previous answers. Chat History is saved for 30 days.
View past conversations — Your recent conversations are saved and accessible from the Assistant panel.
Continue a conversation — You can pick up where you left off or ask follow-up questions.
Start fresh — Begin a new conversation when you are ready to change topics.
In some products like Autodesk Construction Cloud, conversations remain persistent across different tools within the platform.
Your feedback helps improve Autodesk Assistant. When the Assistant gives you a response, you can rate it and add comments.
After receiving a response, click the thumbs up or thumbs down icon below the response.
(Optional) Add a comment explaining what was helpful or what went wrong.
Submit your feedback.
Thumbs up tells us the response was helpful—we will aim to provide more like it.
Thumbs down tells us something was not right—your comments help us understand what to improve.
Specific, detailed feedback is most helpful. For example:
"The steps were clear and worked perfectly."
"The answer was about a different feature than what I asked about."
"The information was outdated."
