Breakdown

The Breakdown module of the Protector allows you to determine which pipes in a hydraulic network will need to be closed during the event of a pipe break.

Identify which pipes contain shut-off valves and which do not. A Breakdown simulation allows you to accurately identify pipes that can and should be closed in order to isolate a pipe element from the rest of the water system.

Source Location

Use this to identify the contaminant source node. You can specify the display color using the Color on Map section below. Use the Browse button to select the source node in the map view.

Closable Devices

• Include Active Valves - Click on this checkbox to include active valves as closable devices.

• Include Active Pumps - Click on this checkbox to include active pumps as closable devices.

Closable Pipes

• All pipes in the domain that are capable of being closed will be be evaluated during the Isolation simulation.  You can group these pipes in the form of a domain. Use the Edit Domain button to open the Domain Manager.

• Select all pipes in the system that are capable of being closed that will be be evaluated during the Isolation simulation.  You can group these pipes in the form of a graphical selection. Use the Selection button to select the pipes in the map view.

Results Selection Set

• Affected Facilities - Use Affected Facilities to select a selection set to store the affected facilities upon completion of the Isolation simulation. Specify a display color for the affected facilities in the Color on Map section below. Use the Browse button to open the Selection Set Manager.

• Extend Affected Area by Connectivity Search - This selection will extend affected areas by evaluating the connectivity of the pipes within the area.

• Closed Facilities - Use Closed Facilities to designate a selection set to store the facilities that will need to be closed in order to isolate the affected pipes. Specify a display color for the affected facilities in the Color on Map section below. Use the Browse button to open the Selection Set Manager.

Color on Map

Use this box to specify a display color for the affected facilities, source location, and closed facilities.

• Source Location - Select the color to display Source Locations on the map display.

• Affected Facilities - Select the color to display Affected Facilities on the map display.

• Closed Facilities - Select the color to display Closed Facilities on the map display.

Run - Run the breakdown simulation.

Notify - Determine the affected customers after running the simulation.

Purge Water... - Determine the total amount of contaminated water that needs to be purged from the system after the simulation run.

Update Map - Use Update Map to update the map view and display the affected facilities.

Options - The Options button is used for assigning the GIS-based layer to be used for conducting a customer notification.  

Reset Map - Click Reset Map to set the map display to its default state.

Close - Click Close to close the Protector dialog box. To conduct another water security analysis, simply click on another analysis tab in the Protector dialog box.
