To create a model with Model Builder

Model Builder allows you to quickly and easily create models based on a specific area of interest.

You can use the Model Builder with or without an Autodesk Docs account.

  1. From InfraWorks Home, click Model Builder.

  2. Click aerial (Switch to aerial) from the top right of the dialog to display an aerial view or click road (Switch to road) for the road view.

  3. Type a location into the search field or navigate to the location for your model.

  4. Select an area of interest.

Note: The Model Builder supports model areas up to 200 square kilometers, or lengths up to 200 kilometers in latitude or longitude.
    • Click extents to select the current map extents.
    • Click rectangular AOI to draw a rectangular area of interest on the map.
    • Click polygonal AOI to draw a polygonal area of interest on the map.
    • Click import AOI to import a polygonal area of interest
  5. Enter a name for the model and optionally a description.

    model name

  6. Select a coordinate system for the model. This cannot be changed once the model has been created.

To get started quickly, you can select LL84 as the model's coordinate system. However, if you plan to send this Infraworks model to other applications like Autodesk Civil3D or Autodesk Revit, do not use LL84; choose a projected coordinate system instead of a geographic coordinate system.

Note: Custom coordinate systems cannot be used to create Model Builder models.
Note: Some applications such as Autodesk Civil 3D and Autodesk Revit do not support InfraWorks model data when the model has been created using a geographic coordinate system, such as the LL84 coordinate system. If you have created an InfraWorks model that uses a geographic coordinate system and you want to exchange data with Autodesk Civil 3D or Autodesk Revit, you will need to re-create the model and assign a projected coordinate system, such as a state plane coordinate system, upon model creation.
  7. Click Create Model.

InfraWorks will confirm that your model is being prepared.

Note: Optionally, click Show details and write down the Tracking ID for your Model Builder model. The Tracking ID can be provided to Autodesk support if you don't receive your Model Builder model within about 15 or 20 minutes.
  8. InfraWorks sends an email notification to the email address associated with your Autodesk Account when Model Builder has successfully created the model.

  9. The new Model Builder model displays in the Recent page of InfraWorks Home as a cloud-only Model Builder model, which is not yet locally cached on your machine or associated with an Autodesk Docs project.

Note: The new model tile will display an model builder model icon.
  10. Click the model tile.

  11. A dialog displays, prompting you to choose how you want to store the new model.

    store model

If you select Autodesk Docs, you will be prompted to select an Autodesk Docs project folder to store the new model in. If you select Local, the model will be saved to your default cache location, as defined in Application Options.

  12. Once you select the storage option for this new model, InfraWorks will upgrade and open the model.
