Bridge Options

The Bridge Tool allows you to connect border edges by creating a polygons between them. Use these options to set what happens when you select Edit Mesh > Bridge.

Bridge type
Controls the profile shape of the bridged region.
Linear path

When the Linear path is selected, the bridging mesh that gets created is straight. That is, the bridge spans between the selected edges in a straight line. The Twist and Taper options are not available when the Linear path option is selected.

Smooth path

When Smooth path is selected, the bridging mesh that gets created transitions between the selected edges in a smooth fashion based on an internal or implied curve. The implied curve, which extends off either side of the selected edges, is created to determine the shape of the bridging mesh. The angle that the curve extends off either set of selected edges is perpendicular to the average of the surface normals on the selected edges for each side. When Smooth path is selected you can modify the shape of the bridging mesh using the Twist and Taper options.

Smooth path + curve

When the Smooth path + curve setting is selected, the bridging mesh that gets created transitions between the selected edges in a smooth fashion. In addition, an explicit curve, that extends off either side of the selected edges, gets created to determine the shape of the bridging mesh. To modify the shape of the bridging mesh, you can either modify the Twist and Taper attributes or manually edit the explicit curve to change the shape.

Direction

Determines which sides of the source and target edges/faces are bridged. When set to Automatic, Maya will try to determine the most appropriate sides based on existing topology. When set to Manual, you can specify each side using the Source and Target settings.

Twist

Rotates the bridging mesh between the originally selected borders. The default angle is zero. The Twist option is not available when the Bridge type is set to Linear path.

Taper

Controls the shape of the bridged region along its width. The default setting is 1 (no taper). To control the taper exactly you’ll need to open the Polygon Bridge Attributes section in the Attribute Editor and then the Taper Curve section and use the graph control to set scaling along the length of the curve. For more information see the Taper/Taper Curve documentation in Extrude Options. The Taper option is not available when the Bridge type is set to Linear path.

Divisions

Specifies the number of equally spaced segments that get created between the selected border edges. The default number of divisions is 0.

Smoothing angle

Specifies whether or not the inserted edges on the bridge, as well as the bridge borders, are automatically softened or hardened when the operation is complete. When the Smoothing angle is set to 180 (default) the inserted edges will appear soft. When the Smoothing angle is set to a value less than 180, the inserted edges appear hard.
