You can use the following assignment modes to apply loads to elements:

Direct.
A default mode if you have not selected elements to apply the load to.
Use this mode to apply loads to elements that you select directly in the drawing area. You can select elements consistent with the load type. For example, for surface loads, you can select surface elements. You can select one element at a time. The load is applied instantly. The load contour displays in the model view.

Selection.
A default mode if you already selected elements in the drawing area.
Use this mode to apply loads to a selection of elements. Elements in your selection that are consistent with the load type, display in the selection box. For example, for member loads, numbers of linear elements display in the box. Click Apply to apply the load to the elements in the box. The load contour displays in the model view.
You can change the assignment mode from Direct to Selection and from Selection to Direct.
